Three Wenches" 1926 by Artist Otto Dix
The wench on the floor is practicing Uttana Shishosana or Extended puppy pose. This pose stretches the spine and helps open the shoulders. In this pose, make sure you keep your hips above your knees as pictured. In this painting, the wench on the floor has her elbows touching the ground. It is best to keep the arms active and not let the elbows touch the ground so you can get a good stretch on the upper back and shoulders as well as the spine.
As you come into the pose, close your eyes, breathe into your back, lengthen from the front of the body to the back of the body, and feel a good stretch in the spine as you relax your neck and drop your forehead to the floor. And don't forget about that silly little dog of yours that always wants to get in on your yoga practice.
All in good fun,
